There are several methods you can use to install or deploy Microsoft Project:
- Install from the CD
- Create an administrative installation point
- Install from an administrative installation point
- Run from an administrative installation point
Note An administrative installation point must be created before you can install or run Microsoft Project from a network share. See Create an administrative installation point for more information about creating an administrative installation point.

To install Project Standard or Project Professional directly from the CD, place the CD in your CD-ROM drive and follow the steps indicated during the Setup process.
During the setup process, you will be prompted to type or select the following information:
Product Key Type the 25-character Product Key number. It is located on your Certificate of Authenticity or the sticker on the back of the CD case.
User Information Type your User Name, Initials, and Organization in the boxes provided.
Accept End-User License Agreement To continue with the Project installation, you must accept the terms of the End-User License Agreement. To accept the agreement, click the check box I accept the terms in the License Agreement.
Type of Installation Select the type of installation that you want. You can select from the following installation types:
- Typical Install This option installs all of the files most commonly used to run Microsoft Project.
If you are installing the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack, selecting Typical Install installs Office 2003 MUI Pack with the same components installed by Office. If you are installing Office 2003 Proofing tools, selecting Install Now installs Microsoft Office Proofing Tools with the default settings, including the most commonly used components.
To view or install items that are not installed automatically, click Custom Install. A list of features will appear on the screen. In the list, you will see items that are already selected; those items are installed automatically when you choose the Typical Install option.
- Upgrade If a preview version of Microsoft Project is installed, this option installs the new version of the product based on your current configuration. Setup will remove the previous version. If you wish to keep the previous version rather than remove it, choose Custom Install, which lets you specify the applications you want to keep. If there isn't a previous version of Microsoft Project installed, Upgrade is not an available option.
- Complete Install A complete installation installs all Project components.
- Minimal Install A minimal installation installs only the minimal required components. The majority of features will be installed when they are first used. This option is not available if you are installing the Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack or Office 2003 Proofing Tools.
- Custom A custom installation lets you select from a list of all available Project features and components. Choose how you want them installed, and decide whether you want to keep your current version of Project.
- Proofing Tools Only Available only if you are installing Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack. This option installs only the proofing tools and other editing tools in Office 2003 MUI Pack.
Notes
- If the Setup program does not begin automatically, select the Start menu, click Run, and then click Browse. On the Microsoft Project 2003 CD in the CD-ROM drive, select Setup.exe, click Open, and then click OK.
- If you are converting a trial version of Project, you must use the Product Key from a full version of Project. Your full version Product Key can be found either on the package you purchased at a store or in the the confirmation email you received after making your purchase of Project online.

The most common method for deploying a customized version of Microsoft Project to a large number of users is to create an administrative installation point on a network server, and then have users run Setup from that location. You can create an administrative installation point only if your copy of Microsoft Project includes the prjstde or prjproe MSI file in the root directory of the Microsoft Project CD.
Creating an administrative installation point provides several advantages over installing Microsoft Project from the CD, and allows you to do the following:
- Manage one set of Microsoft Project files from a central location.
- Create a standard Microsoft Project configuration for all users.
- Manage controlled upgrades of Microsoft Project in the future.
- Install on demand.
To create an administrative installation point, do the following:
- Create a share on a network server for the administrative installation point.
The network share must have at least 550 megabytes (MB) of available disk space.
- On a computer that has write access to the share, connect to the server share.
The computer must be running a supported operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later, or Windows XP or later.
- On the Start menu, click Run, and then click Browse.
- On the Microsoft Project CD in the CD-ROM drive, select Setup.exe, and then click Open
- In the Open box, following Setup.exe, type /a, and then click OK.
For example: d:\setup.exe /a
- Type the organization name that you want to define for all users who install Microsoft Project from this location.
- Type the server and share you created as the administrative installation location.
- Type the 25-character Product Key, and then click Next.
Users who install Project from this administrative installation point are not prompted to enter a product key when they install Project or start Project for the first time, nor are they required to activate the product.
- Accept the End-user Licence Agreement, and then click Install.
By accepting the agreement here, you are accepting on behalf of all users who install Project from this administrative installation point.
Setup copies the files from the Project CD to the administrative installation point, extracts the compressed cabinet (CAB) files, and creates a hierarchy of folders in the root folder of the share. The System Files Update is automatically included during an administrative installation.
After you create the administrative installation point, make sure it is available to users by providing them with read access.
Tip It may make sense to create multiple administrative installation points from which your users can install Microsoft Project. As long as you use relative paths for any customizations that include paths, you can copy the complete folder hierarchy and files from one administrative installation point to multiple servers. If you copy the folders, each new administrative image that you create has the same default organization name specified in Setup.
After you have created an administrative installation point, users may either install or run Microsoft Project from this location.

Product activation technology is built into Microsoft Project. Product activation is not registration, but rather technology aimed at reducing software piracy in order to ensure that you are receiving the product quality that you expect. You may be prompted to activate Microsoft Project after you have completed installation in one of the following methods:
-
Internet Microsoft servers process the activation and silently activate the product.
-
Telephone Customer service representatives process activations and exceptions.
Some quick facts about product activation:
- Activation is completely anonymous and requires no personally identifiable information.
- A unique Product Key is required for each installation. This can be found on the CD case that contains Microsoft Project.
- Product activation is easy. You should only be required to activate Microsoft Project once unless you move the application from one PC to another or upgrade a significant number of components within your PC.
- You will not be required to activate if you have acquired Microsoft Project through a Microsoft volume licensing program.
- Customer service representatives are available to provide local language support.
For more information about Microsoft product activation, including frequently asked questions, see the Microsoft Software Piracy Web site.
TopIf you have installed Project Professional 2003 and you plan to use it for enterprise project management and team collaboration, you must first connect to Project Server 2003 and then specify server and account setup information.
You must have Microsoft Project Server account to log on to your organization's project server. To add an account:
- On the Tools menu, point to Enterprise Options, and then click Microsoft Project Server Accounts.
- Click Add.
- In the Account Properties dialog box, type the account name in Account Name box, and then type the server name in the Project Server URL box.
You can click Test Connection to test the connection.
- Under When connecting, to select an account to use, do one of the following:
- To select Windows authentication (domain/password), click Use Windows user account.
- To select Project Server authentication (username/password), click Use a Microsoft Project Server account, and then type a name to use when you log on to Microsoft Project Server in the User name box.
- If you would like to make this the default account to use when connecting to Project Server, click Set as default account.
- Click OK.
